What does “Workplace Ergonomics” mean for you?

The Impact of Workplace Ergonomics

No matter what activity you are doing at work or even at home, the ergonomics must be considered. Whether you are lifting a light object multiple times, pushing a cart or sitting at a desk, injury can occur.

According to WorkSafeBC, injuries with relation to ergonomics account for nearly 1/3 of WCB claims.Everyone must look at all risk factors, no matter how small, when deciding to take on a task.

Back injuries are a common issue from repeated work or over stressing the muscles.

Assessing the risks fully will allow you to determine the best solution to minimize these risks. Moving the object fewer times, getting help on heavy or awkward loads, or using a dolly cart are all ways to help minimize the impact of strains to the back and the rest of the body.

Though we may not expect it, sitting for extended periods of time can also cause pain and discomfort. Periodic breaks to stretch and get the muscles moving, as well as being set up comfortably will reduce the likelihood of injury.

When sitting feet should be flat, knees at a 90° angle and back straight and supported against the back of your chair.

An assessment of your workstation by a second set of eyes can prove very helpful to be sure that the risk of injury is being minimized.

Keeping good ergonomics in the forefront of your mind can help you to reduce the pain and suffering of back or other problems. Take the time to assess the risks associated with whatever you are embarking upon and make it a lot more enjoyable for yourself over the long run.
